EP

(Release Date: March 7, 2006)

Album Review

Twenty-two-year-old Amy Kuney’s debut album, EP, leaves quite a thoughtful aftertaste.  Not because her listeners are left hanging with questions at the end of each song, but rather because of her frankness in each story.  All six tracks of the soon-to-be-released EP are full and bursting with her own raw, personal experience transformed into a final product accessible to her audience.  In her own words, “I write because I know that there are thousands of ‘I’m the only ones’ out there”, which is admirable to hear, particularly from such a young woman, given the number of music artists out there who write and perform as if they, themselves, are the only ones.  Neither approach is “right”, but it is often evident in a final piece, which one was employed.  In Kuney’s case, she manages to stay personal and inclusive all at once.

Having skill in both piano and acoustic guitar seems to have given Amy Kuney noticeable latitude in her music writing styles.   Certainly the overall “style” of the album remains her own, but her songs do not all sound the same – each has its own life and therefore its own form of expression.  The smooth, open chorus of “How The Wind Must Feel” contrasts with the cluttered beat and lyrics surrounding it to express the freeness of escape.  The mild lament of “Sore Loser” takes on the bounce and vocal styling of perhaps a jazzy jug band.  And “Breaking Bad Habits” finishes the album with a dramatic change of mood, as bare vocals, piano and violin share a decided but almost regretful starting over from an unhealthy relationship.

The opening track “So Help Me God” (which made its television debut this past week on the day-time soap, Passions) along with “Sold Out” and “In The Dark” similarly sparkle with musical choices that compliment their tales.  All in all, a very notable debut from Amy Kuney who in addition to writing her own lyrics also composed the album’s music.  It will be enjoyable to see what unfolds artistically for and from this young artist throughout the upcoming year, and beyond.

Keep your eyes out for the official release of EP on March 7, 2006.  In the meantime, please visit Amy Kuney’s Official Web Site for the most current related news and media.
